Hey everyone, it’s Rebecca: the owner and founder of Natural Health Strategies. I spent years of my life battling acne and rash-prone skin. But ever since I got my body chemistry in balance, I’ve been able to keep my skin looking clear, moisturized, and refreshed using simple, non-toxic, and affordable products. Below are a few of my favorite handmade beauty products.

Many beauty products on the market contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful to our health. While the chemicals used in these products may not pose an immediate threat, they bioaccumulate over time and can cause negative side effects in the long-run. It’s important to be aware of what’s in your cosmetic products and actively choose ones with clean ingredients. This not only reduces your toxic load, but also supports ethical and transparent companies. If you’d like to learn more about this topic, I suggest that you read our lovely Marketing Assistant’s, Bridget Echavez, latest blog post on how to find non-toxic skincare products using the EWG database.

Believe it or not, I still follow the same natural skincare routine that I outlined 3 years ago. This reliable routine has continued to protect and nourish my skin. However, I’ve recently started to include more handmade products into my routine as well. I like them because they utilize the healing power of herbs, are completely free of preservatives, and are made my small businesses.

My Favorite Handmade Beauty Products

Luna Roots: Heal + Conceal Redness Corrector

Despite having generally clear skin, it’s not uncommon for the occasional pimple to pop up around my period, while I’m traveling, or if I’m under an extra amount of stress. I reach for this red corrector from Luna Roots during those instances. It contains ingredients like yarrow which help to speed up tissue repair and matcha which helps to reduce unsightly redness.

Product Description: A non comodegenic, non-drying softly green tinted balm that cancels out red, hydrates and soothes inflammation. Homegrown and Foraged Nettle, Comfrey and Chamomile wtih Sacred Frankinsence resin all infused in cold-pressed Golden Jojoba oil and steeped for weeks. We also added local beeswax and bee pollen, antioxidant rich elderberry extract and Matcha Powder to fight free radicals and moisturize the skin. A powerhouse essential oil blend With our very own artisan distilled Blue Yarrow oil , Tea Tea, Clary Sage, Juniper and Blue Tansy to clarify, balance, soothe irritaions and inflammation and speed up tissue repair. Very useful in topical facial applications of breakouts, eczema, roseacea and more!

Better than Botox Bee Venom Facial Cream

I used to use Real Scientific Hemp Oil Salve as my nightly moisturizer. While I still consider this a great product, I’ve recently switched to this Bee Venom Facial Cream from Wildflower Apothecary. I apply a thin layer underneath my eyes, on my forehead, and on my neck before I go to sleep. My skin feels moisturized and looks refreshed when I wake up in the morning.

Product Description: Bee Venom is quickly gaining popularity for being the clean alternative to Botox & fillers. Bee venom is now clinically proven effective to plump and smooth wrinkles & fine lines by controlling muscle contractions and increasing blood circulation to the face. This increased blood flow provides fresh oxygen & nutrients, while stimulating collagen & elastin production. Wow! The Venom works in synergy with Evening Primrose & Seaweed Extracts to create the perfect anti-aging cream!

Nature’s Ego: Fenugreek Deep Conditioner

I have what most people consider long hair and I used to really struggle with keeping the ends moisturized. Commercial deep conditioners would help, but would often leave my hair feeling greasy instead of soft. Thankfully I found this Fenugreek Deep Conditioner from Nature’s Ego. I apply it to my hair for 30 minutes, twice a week, and it keeps my hair feeling both soft and strong.

Product Description: Fenugreek Deep Conditioner is formulated with four herbal roots. Marshmallow root, ginger root, burdock root, and horsetail root. key ingredients also include penetrating babassu, silk amino, vitamin B5, conditioning emulsifier, fragrance and more!

Nature’s Ego: Red Onion Shampoo

Over the years, I’ve tried countless natural shampoos. Most of them either dried my hair out or left it feeling incredibly greasy even after I just washed it. I was convinced that effective natural shampoos didn’t exist. But recently I tried this Red Onion Shampoo and Conditioner set from Nature’s ego and it changed my mind. Don’t let the onion scare you, this set smells amazing. Even more importantly, it leaves my hair feeling clean and soft.

Product Description: A stimulating herbal shampoo and conditioner. Great lavender essential oil scent! Wakes up the hair follicles to promote blood flow and circulation in the scalp. Contains herbal oils and extracts such as moroccan argan oil, jojoba oil, curry leaf, and more!

Using non-toxic, handmade beauty products like the ones listed above is a great way to preserve and protect your skin. Try swapping out some of your current skincare products for handmade products in order to avoid pesky pesticides and questionable ingredients.
Establishing a cleaner skincare routine is a great way to enhance your hair and skin, but these topical products can only do so much. It’s essential to nourish your body from the inside out.
